Praised for her “agile and enticing” voice and dynamic stage presence, mezzo-soprano Rae Shrum maintains an active and versatile performance career. Favorite operatic roles include Giovanna (Anna Bolena), L’Opinion Publique (Orphée aux enfers), Charlotte (Werther), Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), and Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel). She has appeared with companies such as Pacific Opera Project, Opera San Luis Obispo, Lyric Opera of Orange County, Long Beach Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Leipziger Kammerchor, and the Long Beach Camerata Singers, among others.
A passionate collaborator in contemporary repertoire, Shrum recently performed as Mary in Michael Ching’s Alice Ryley and Sue in Overtone Industries’ Songs and Dances of Imaginary Lands. This year, she was also selected as an Artistic Fellow for the N.E.O. (New Exploratory Oratorio) Festival in Los Angeles.
Shrum spent a formative year in Leipzig, Germany, studying with internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Elvira Dreßen, and continues her vocal training with LA–based pedagogues Sunjoo Yeo and Reid Bruton.
Offstage, she is Co-Founder of NorthStar Studios LA, a boutique marketing agency, and serves as Executive Director of Source/Filter Music. She is active behind the scenes as a stage director and stage manager, with credits including productions at Independent Opera Company and LA’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre. She also maintains a small roster of private voice and piano students. In her free time, she enjoys salsa dancing, Celtic harp, language study, and staying active.
