SYNOPSIS

Adapted from Goethe’s novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” this opera is based on the true story of two ill-fated lovers. In the late 18th century in a rural part of Germany, Charlotte, the eldest daughter of the local Bailiff, takes care of her brothers and sisters after the recent death of their mother. One evening in July, Charlotte is accompanied to a ball by the young poet Werther. When Werther confesses his love, Charlotte tells him that she is already engaged to Albert, as it was her mother’s dying wish.

Despite their strong connection, Charlotte resolves herself to continue with the arrangement to marry Albert. She sends Werther away, telling him not to return until Christmas. When they finally meet again, Charlotte rejects him once more despite her obvious feelings for him. From there, Werther descends into a despair so permeating that it is more than which he can bear…

SENSITIVE/GRAPIC CONTENT

This opera contains themes of suicide which may not be suitable for all audiences. This will be a concert version and is in French, so the scene will NOT be acted out. However, we ask that parents/guardians of younger audience members be prepared to have a conversation about this prior to the performance.
